In the middle of examining my personal and professional motivations, I came across a career theory that made sense to me "narrative counseling" or "life as story." This theory is described by Professor Larry Cochran in his book Career Counseling: A Narrative Approach (SAGE Publications, 1997). Cochran said that the two basic reasons for exploring a person’s life history are:
(1) Past experiences provide information about a person’s interests, values, abilities, motives, and character strengths.
(2) The way experiences are selected and organized expresses a unifying story of life.
After I had finished writing my book, I was able to find meaning in my story. At the end of the book, I give examples of three ways to select and organize these experiences: (a) Lifework Activities, (b) Lifework Book Clubs, and (c) Lifework Poetry.
